Game Based Learning | Storytelling | Gamification

Interactive Branched Videos

This AWARD WINNING project I created for the University of Berne.

I was mainly responsible for the concept, the story structure, the writting and the animations.

As a kid I loved such books that allowed me to participate by making my own choices and therefore being a part of the storyline. You know, in the sense of "When you think the gardener was the killer, turn to page so and so". These so-called gamebooks gave me a feeling of empowerment, a feeling that I, as a reader, was somewhat in charge of the story.

And that is what we tried to accomplish with this project: Giving the students a feeling of empowerment, that they are in charge of the narrative and that their decisions make a difference in the story's progression.

We used storytelling and direct participation to teach the students about the complex interplay between basic democratic processes and sustainability efforts.

In branched interactive videos they step into the shoes of a small town's Mayor and can make decisions for the benefit of a fictional town, its citizens, and businesses. After each decision Professor Ingold gives some theoretical inputs before the story is further unfolding. In that way the students can feel and see the direct consequences of their decisions and thus learn what matters in terms of democracy and sustainability. Educational research backs that learning contents stick well with this sort of involvement.

And thanks to its innovative structure it's playable via Youtube
